Page 14 • MICEBTN - March-April 2019 BAlI, INDONESIA BAlI, INDONESIA Bamboo masterpieces now a unique attraction winning praise from MICE delegates WHEN Elora Hardy, founder of the now-iconic Balinese company Ibu- ku www.ibuku.com, gave a TED Talk in 2015 about her building projects titled Magical houses, made of bamboo, she probably didn’t ex- pect it to notch up more than four million views. But it’s not really surprising, giv- en that the bamboo masterpieces characterised by the Ibuku brand have become a unique attraction of the Balinese landscape. They can be sighted in many plac- es around the island, including at Four Seasons Sayan www.foursea- sons.com/sayan in Ubud where Ibu- ku created a yoga pavilion and then last year added the Sokasi Cooking School, both perfect venues for wedding group activities. Ibuku buildings and furniture also abound at the famous Green School Bali www.greenschool.org. Also built around the Ibuku phi- losophy is Bamboo U www.bam- boou.com, whose shorter courses could potentially be built into an outside-the-square incentive re- ward program. The Bamboo U campus is located next to the Ibuku design office and bamboo factory, and within walking distance of the Green School. The curriculum covers botanics, tradi- tional craftsmanship, engineering, biophilic design and the fundamen- tals of sustainable bamboo archi- tecture. Every topic is supported by theoretical lectures and practi- cal workshops. Participants also have the op- portunity to meet and engage with bamboo innovators, entrepreneurs and designers, including Green School co-founder John Hardy, Elora’s father. Bamboo U has a constantly renewing schedule of courses. For example, April/May will bring a 5-day bamboo design and carpen- try course (April 17-21) and a 5-day build a bamboo string instrument (April 10-14), then from May 4-15 an edition of the 11-day ‘bamboo intensive’.
