With Heathrow’s expansion gaining initial government approval in June (but with many possible hurdles including court action still expected to delay construction of a third runway), Seko believes Heathrow will become a vital gateway for a plethora of new cross-border trading opportunities for both British and international businesses. The new 22,000 sq ft pur- pose-built facility in Egham is part of a GBP5-million-plus com- mitment to support customers’ international shipment volumes including pureplay e-tailer busi- ness from the UK to Australia, New Zealand and the US. It also provides additional capacity to manage new business from British brands. Seko opened its first UK location in 2003 and now operates eight facilities there. Excluding the US, where Seko was founded in 1976, the UK is now its largest global mar- ket in a network of 120-plus offices in more than 40 countries. Current- ly, the UK is the third largest e-com- merce market in the world, with 46 per cent of UK SMEs exporting and receiving revenue from overseas. Keith O’Brien, Seko’s chief op- erating officer – EMEA, said: “We are growing organically, mainly on the strength of existing customer recommendations as well as our specialist expertise, expanding our global footprint and reputa- tion for helping British companies to quickly access the lucrative cross-border e-commerce space, which has been our biggest growth area in the past three years. This will continue because of the inter- national demand for British brands. Our decision to invest in this new facility close to Heathrow will make the cross-border delivery process even easier for our customers.” Addressing ‘The Delivery Con- ference’ in London recently, Justin Irvine, commercial director of Seko Omni-Channel Logistics said: “It’s now possible for UK e-tailers to deliver to Asia and Australasia – col- lectively the largest e-commerce growth market in the world – in two or three days for under GBP10.00. Companies that deploy these increased service levels can expect to see their businesses grow 1.6 times faster.” Seko Logistics’ global expansion saw the opening of its second-larg- est operation in Europe at Amster- dam’s Schiphol Logistics Park in February. The Amsterdam opera- tion provides a further distribution channel into Europe for US retail- ers and will help to spearhead the development of the company’s Final Mile and White Glove services across the continent .
