Page 6 • MICEBTN - May-June 2018 ThE MEETINgs Mean Business Canada Coalition (formerly known as Business Events Industry Coali- tion of Canada) is now established as the organisation for MICE events in Canada. After signing a licensing agree- ment with Meetings Mean Busi- ness, support more than doubled and a deal with Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) now sees the organisation as the official advocate on behalf of the meetings industry and the coalition’s secre- tariat. Heidi Welker, chair, Meetings Mean Business Canada outlined the aims and objectives of MMBC as follows: To become a single advocacy voice of the meetings industry in Canada, through our relation- ship with TIAC; to communicate the economic and social value of face-to-face meetings to elected officials at all levels of the govern- ment as well as stakeholders across Canada; and to shape policy, legisla- tion and investment to ensure our industry prospers. Over the last few months the leadership has held coalition meet- ings throughout Canada to hear the concerns of industry leaders and build consensus around the direc- tion of the coalition. To this end MMBC has set up three committees to research and recommend, namely: - A sustainable financial model (chaired by Heidi Welker, senior vice president, business develop- ment and industry partnerships, Freeman Audio Visual Canada). - Curation of unified data for our industry (co-chaired by Clark Grue, president and ceo Calgary Telus Convention Centre and Meetings Heidi Welker Big changes in Canada... Meetings coalition inks MMB contract YVONNE Adele will be master of ceremonies at the 11th annu- al conference of Australia’s PCO Association, to be held in the new extension to the Mel- bourne Convention and Exhi- bition Centre 09-11 December 2018. PCOA president Barry Neame said engaging Yvonne was a milestone for the association, saying ‘it’s the first time we’ve had a female emcee for a PCOA conference’. “Yvonne previously worked with us as a program speaker at the 2016 conference. This year’s theme is a proac- tive call to all meeting planners to seek out fresh perspectives and try something new. The program will encompass the many facets needed by meeting planners to be effective in 2018 and beyond. It also will formulate a board of directors’ succession plan that will include national representation from across Canada. “The MMBC board of directors are working diligently to give our industry the scale and bandwidth that we need to communicate our message about the importance of face-to-face meetings and the eco- nomic and social impact they bring to our communities,” said Welker. Bogotá to host BestCities Global Forum in December AssOCIATIONs from around the world will meet in Bogotá, Colombia in December 2018 for a week of workshops and networking around the theme of ‘ Power of the People ‘ at the annual BestCities Global Forum. Speakers at this year’s Forum include: Rick Antonson an “accidental executive” and former ceo of Tourism Vancouver; Lina Tangarife, director of Social Responsibility at the Social Alliance of Uniandinos, Bogotá and Neyder Culchac, from a region called Putumayo in south-west Columbia. Culchac will share his life story and educate delegates on the power of determination. Returning for a second year, Sean Blair, owner of ProMeet, will facilitate this year’s Forum being held at the Agora Bogotá Convention Centre.
