The Quod was built in 1863 to house Aboriginal male prisoners, then in 1911 the cells were converted into tourist accommodation forming part of the Rottnest Lodge. In what is thought to be one of the longest receiv- erships in Australian history, after 20 years the Lodge finally had a new owner – the Karma Royal Group - and was rebranded Karma Rottnest in 2012. Next year, more changes are scheduled. The Quod will be handed back to the Rottnest Island Authority to become a cultural site, and Karma Rottnest will see a refurbishment and upgrade of accommodation and con- ference facilities. Karma Rottnest Resort, located in the heart of Thompson Bay at Rot- tnest Island, is only a short 25 minute ferry ride from Perth yet a world away from city life. Visitors enter a com- pletely new world from the moment they step onto the jetty. There are reefs and wrecks to discover, World War II tunnels to explore and it boasts 63 secluded beaches, 20 pristine bays, turquoise seas and the friendliest marsupials you’ll ever meet. What started out as colonial barracks over 150 years ago, today Karma Rottnest has been transformed into a truly unique destination offering a serene retreat in which to relax and recharge. Karma Rottnest offers the island’s premier accom- modation, Karma Day Spa, Riva Restaurant , The Court- house Bar, Gov’s Bar and the Island’s only swimming pool. Corporate retreats are marketed as a reward mechanism for companies, including fully-equipped conference facilities to deliver the ultimate morale booster. Karma Rottnest also can be used for conferences and product launches. Coupled with unrivalled natural surrounds and with a menu of activities that includes movie screenings, bike tours and wine-tastings, it is a unique venue perfect for confer- ence guests, who can celebrate the end of an amazing day with a sundowner at Riva Restaurant.
