It is believed to be the first of its kind in the South Pacific. Further resort check-ins are likely. The concept was trialled during the 2017 Fiji International Golf Tournament and Pre-COP 23 convention. Feedback was “overwhelmingly positive” from guests and resort staff. Andre Viljoen, Fiji Airways md/ceo, says the check-in leaves guests “free to enjoy Fiji for a few more hours”. When they transfer to the airport they go straight to security. “It’s all about adding value on departure day.” Fiji events fund evolving dETErMINEd to boost national earnings through an emphasis more on quality than simply visitor numbers, Fiji has introduced an innovative Events Evaluation and Funding Framework, administered by Tourism Fiji. Faiyaz Koya, Fiji’s Tourism minister, said that by focusing on yield rather than numbers, tourism could continue to grow sustainably with less pressure on the environment. He explained the Events Development Fund was aimed at events that are Fi- jian-owned and operated, especially those “that are getting established or in early stages of development, such as the Sabeto Horse Racing event, Uprising Music Festival and Grasshoppers Netball Festival”. There is also a Marquee Event Fund which will target large-scale local and international events. These can be either Fijian-owned or international “but the event must be held in Fiji”. Record buyer sign- up for FTE 2018 The 2018 Fiji Tourism Expo has signed up a record number of buyers and also drawn solid industry support, including Tourist Transport Fiji coming on board as a major sponsor. TTF will again handle all ground transfers as well as meet and greet services. FTE 2018 will be held at the Denarau Island Convention Centre from April 10-12. TTF has a fleet of 52 vehicles ranging from cars to 48-seat coaches. In recent years it has been investing heavily in a fleet upgrade program and intends to commission seven new coaches in 2018.
