MICEBTN - JUNE-AUGUST 2017 • Page 39 WeSterN AUStrALIA 30 years of marine parks celebrated WESTERN Australia has a host of coastal marine reserves spread out along its lengthy coast – one of the greatest maritime treasures of the world. While some of the big- gest are in remote areas, the state’s first marine park is in Perth itself. Marmion Marine Park has just celebrated its 30th anni- versary. Situated off Perth’s northern suburbs between Trigg Island and Burns Beach, Marmion Marine Park features lagoons, reefs and small islands that provide habitats for seabirds, marine mammals and other diverse marine life. Melissa Evans, the park’s co-ordinator, said Marmion’s creation introduced West Australians to the concept of marine protected areas and began a movement of con- serving areas and providing special places for people to enjoy and learn about WA’s spectacular marine life. “Bottlenose dolphins and Australian sea lions can be spotted throughout the year in the park and humpback whales pass through the deeper waters during their annu- al migration between June and November,” she said.
