Paul Papalia Floatplane touring in style to wine country A DECADE or so ago there was talk in the tourism sector that floatplanes had had their day – few were being built, the depend- able oldies were retiring, clients were looking for new experienc- es. Wrong! Floatplanes have turned out to be new experiences in a big way worldwide, using both dependable oldies and a burgeon- ing stock of fresh new equipment. Perth has joined the trend with the debut of Swan River Sea- planes (www.swanriverseaplanes.com.au) an operator which spe- cialises in luxury tours. Swan River Seaplanes – named for Perth’s own lifeblood water- way – offers day tours to the Margaret River wine region for up to 12 people at a time. These are very well suited as con- ference breakouts, pre/post tour op- tions and incentive rewards. The day starts with a transfer to the city river base, then a low and slow take-off across the Perth and scenic flight-seeing down the coast to Margaret River. Guestss trans- fer to ground transport for winery visits including lunch which features local foods as well as wines. Then back to Perth for a gentle landing on the Swan. Swan River Seaplanes is a sister company of Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures www.horizontalfallsadventures.com.au in the Kimberley, an operator which has deservedly won awards for its upmarket product.
