The film festival has been assured of government support to help it continue its growth. In terms of audience numbers cinéfest oz has soared from little more than niche status in 2008 to nowadays drawing substantial crowds. Some movie enthusiasts visit from interstate while many attend regularly from Perth. Impressive as those statistics are, the initiative goes further, featuring Australia’s richest film prize, industry functions and deep-seated support for the Australian film industry. Next year cinéfest oz will run from August 23-27. Another benefit of cinéfest oz is that it has encouraged moviemakers to consider the south-west for filming locations. In the past three years five films have been made in the region and a further 10 or more are in either pre-production or development.
