An airport property seemed my best option. Checking room availability and prices on Wotif, I booked a serviced apartment at Quest Mascot www.questapartments. com.au This was a first for me, so I sent an email direct to Quest Mascot asking if it was accessible from the Qantas domes- tic terminal by foot, mainly because like most business travellers, I’ve suffered the wrath of cabbies unhappy that after sitting in a queue for a long time, they end up with a minimal fare. I only half-expected an answer from Quest because it was early on a Sun- day morning and I was leaving in a few hours. To my surprise, I received a person- able reply almost immediately from a front office staffer, Nikita. And what a reply: she gave very spe- cific and easy-to-follow walking instruc- tions while also recommending a shuttle operator (Redy2Go www.redy2go.com. au) and sharing her experiences with getting cabs (not much of a prob- lem, she suggested, also advising likely cost). I thanked her, saying they were the best and clearest instructions I’d been given in a long while. Nikita subsequently followed up with a couple of other suggestions and said she would be at Quest Mascot when I arrived that after- noon. Indeed she was and despite nearing the end of her shift she was extremely helpful with local advice on where the best F&B out- lets were to be found within a few minutes’ walk. I had used the shuttle – straight out of the terminal, on board and away - and pre-booked again for the morning when checking in at Quest Mascot. The shuttle driver agreed with my positive comments, saying he had heard much the same from other travellers. I filled in a Quest guest questionnaire at the airport, recommending Nikita for an ‘employee of the month’ award if they had one. I hope she got it. - Kelvin King • We’d like to hear of ‘beyond the call’ experiences from readers to feature in upcoming issues or in our e-news service.
