Busselton Jetty 150 years old WESTERN Australian icon the Busselton Jetty, built in 1865 and at 1841 metres in length the longest wooden piled jetty in the southern hemisphere, is celebrating its 150th birthday. Now used exclusively for tourism and recreation, it had a colourful past as a working jetty. “Visitors can walk or catch the jetty train all the way to the end – it really does feel like you’re in the middle of the ocean,” said Don Tomkinson, president of the Busselton Jetty Environment and Conservation Association. “The underwater obser- vatory allows visitors an ‘up close and personal’ view of the stunning marine life in Geographe Bay – it’s a once in a lifetime experience.” All funds received are reinvested in the jetty in one form or another – pri- marily for maintenance and infrastruc- ture development. “With over 400,000 visitors a year, the Busselton Jetty’s undoubtedly one of the region’s – and Western Australia’s – most iconic historical attractions, said Pip Close, chief executive officer of the Augusta Margaret River Tour- ism Association.
